5/5 ⭐ | Rampage (The Jason Scarsdale Series Book 2) by Alan Brenham

Mad Dog, Rastaman, and Runt are the villains that steal the show in the second book of The Jason Scarsdale Series.  Navigating the complexities of a long-distance relationship as Dani Mueller has returned to Germany, Jason Scarsdale is determined to make it work.  But a string of murders and robberies with an odd signature prevents Scarsdale from celebrating his daughter’s birthday in Germany with Dani as planned.

Author Alan Brenham does an incredible job of emotionally investing readers into the plot.  I felt real anger and frustration towards both Dani and Jason as they traversed a difficult relationship hurdle.  The decisions they both independently made had me shaking my head and screaming at the book in front of me.

Woven amongst this personal tug of war is the fierce and scary ex-con, Mad Dog, and his henchmen followers as they commit heinous acts around the city.  Leaving a trail of destruction in their wake, with little remorse, as reality seems to blur.  With the pressure on for Scarsdale to catch them before they can kill any more innocent people, his relationship seemingly begins to unwind.

Brenham shows his true talent for character creation as he provides dualling points of view, putting readers in the head of both an irrational killer, ex-con, and sociopath, as well as Scarsdale’s personal and professionally focused mind.  Through Scarsdale’s struggles as he receives a new partner on the force, deals with his own relationships, and faces a ticking clock with killers on the loose, the suspense and action never stops on the pages of “Rampage.”
