5/5 ⭐ | The K-Frost Caper by James Blakley

“What good is being rich, if you can’t enjoy it in this life?” – pg. 137.

Author James Blakley has crafted an action packed, fast-paced thriller in the melting pot of Miami.  From the very first page readers’ adrenaline will be pumping as Luna Nightcrow wraps up a deadly and exhilarating Talisman insurance fraud, immediately giving readers access to the type of work, dedication, and thrills such a job entails.

Luna Nightcrow is quickly reengaged for her next investigation as Charmed Life Mutual receives an application for a dead man.  Kelvin Frost reemerges two and a half years later, seeking more insurance after having drowned in Mobile, Alabama.  Accident or fraudulent deceit?  Luna is on the case as she makes for an excellent independent insurance investigator.  Off to Miami to get to the bottom of this, Luna is given free run of the city.  Stumbling into a bigger scheme afoot, Nightcrow is determined to unravel the murder, museums, and life insurance mayhem.

Blakley pens a fun and intriguing side to insurance fraud.  Taking something often thought of as mundane, life insurance, and creating an exciting, whirlwind of special agent proportions with his Luna Nightcrow character and her insurance investigations.  With a side of romance and courting, I loved the female perspective that was added to this read as Luna navigated her present-day life and the incompatibility with love and children that it poses. There were a lot of nuanced themes at play in this entertaining and exhilarating jaunt from Oklahoma to Miami.
