Off the heels of our first introduction to Larry Nodens in book one, “Designed for Slaughter,” readers are dropped headfirst into another of Larry’s curious cases. With an unidentified body found near the docks and another body found in the dumpsters of the Kadath Club, Nodens is sent in to investigate these odd deaths.
Book two of the Larry Nodens series, “Bound by Possibilities,” offers readers more insight into the Overlord Authority. The role they play in society, the rules they enforce and the beliefs, adherence, and promises their authority brings. Larry’s daughter Dani also takes on an increased role in this read. Her relationship with Farley deepens, as well as her Schola experiences, and choice in her future. Dani begins to come into herself in this book, and her and Larry’s trust and father/daughter rapport is on full display.
Just as readers settle into Larry Nodens’ life, the world in which he lives and the cases he encounters, they are yanked right back into author Joab Stieglitz’s comfort place. Stieglitz brings new realms, complex beings, and a world in which our wildest dreams couldn’t even imagine to the page in “Bound by Possibilities.” The familiarity we fall into with Larry gets derailed as he begins to unravel new possibilities.
The Larry Nodens series is an impressive new chapter in Stieglitz’s belt as he brings his realms, imagination, and story arcs to the crime and investigative nature of Noden’s character. Stieglitz has created an entire world around the Overlord Authority, but as Selection looms, body parts pile up, and Dani enters the Oracle’s sights, he begins to question it all, determined to unravel the possibilities within.
