5/5 ⭐ | You Are Deathless: A Near-Death Experience Taught Me How to Fully Live and Not Fear Death by Nicole Angelique Kerr

Decades ago, while riding in a 1965 Corvette Convertible, author Nicole Kerr’s life nearly ended forever.  She was just nineteen years old, and a student at the Air Force Academy.  Her near-death experience (NDE) set the tone for the rest of her life and is the epicenter of the book “You Are Deathless.”  Broken into twelve chapters, leading with one of ten lessons identified by the International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS), this book lends an informative, insightful, and appreciated view of someone who has experienced NDEs.

Prior to reading this book I was no stranger to NDEs.  With family in healthcare, I was familiar with the stories of the light, the dead relatives that those with NDE experiences encounter during their flatline, and the various other unexplainable phenomena that can occur.  However, “You Are Deathless” was the first book I’d read that centered around such a topic from a personal perspective.

“You Are Deathless” is a vulnerable read.  Author Nicole Kerr self-proclaims that she doesn’t have a book that delivers easy steps and techniques to happiness, her book isn’t weighed down in the science of it all, and she didn’t have some miracle recovery.  But, what “You Are Deathless” provides is a woman who was born into a family with strict commandments and trauma of their own, living her life to please her family, and blaming herself for the accident that nearly ended her life forever.  This book provides the process, the learning, the loneliness, and troubles she continued to face, ultimately finding love, finding peace, setting boundaries, and learning to endure.

Kerr’s book inspired me.  “You Are Deathless” takes readers not just through her own story, but shows us the power within to live, and no longer fear death.  Ending with a much-welcomed touch, Kerr provides book club questions that force readers to further evaluate what is such a heavy topic and intense experience. I found these questions, after my own reading of the book gave me a great opportunity to better reflect and digest all this book encompasses.

I was prepared to learn a lot from Kerr’s experience, but I wasn’t prepared for the life altering vulnerability that Kerr displays within.  Her honest, brutal, and perceptive account provides readers with lessons, stories, and experiences that will have them living the life they have left more fully and thoughtfully.

5/5 ⭐ | Ran Like Joseph by Jimmy Deas

Author Jimmy Deas has spent more than 40 years in ministry.  Drawing from this experience he has created Mark Thomas, a twenty-five-year-old minister who has taken a less than traditional route to end up at the Gentry Baptist Church in small town Florida.  From the Air Force to college, Thomas dreams of going to Seminary school.

Just one and a half months into his first role as lead pastor, the small town of Gentry is rocked by the odd death of one of their own.  First to the scene, and witness to the events, Reverend Mark Thomas cradles Sammy Garber as he says his last words, “Ran” and “Joseph.”   A local farmer who also plays part-time law officer rushes Sammy and Mark to the nearest hospital, but it’s too late.  Called upon to lead his first funeral in a gripping affair, the town rallies behind the young pastor as he finds his place as one of their own.

Sprinkled with courting, romance, insecurities, and small-town hospitality, this first book in the Mark Thomas novels has readers feeling right at home.  “Ran Like Joseph” will grip readers as they discover the trials and tribulations of small-town living and the true heart of ministry, helping others.  Feel like one of Gentry’s own as Reverend Thomas makes a lasting mark on all he embraces.

God’s plan guides us all, but Reverend Mark Thomas’ path is an interesting and entertaining journey to behold. Deas has gifted us the pleasure of falling into Mark Thomas’ life as he matures, grows in his ministry, and guides the town through this unexpected death.  “Ran Like Joseph” will have you asking for more as Thomas makes a lasting impact far beyond the page.

Facing the Dawn by Cynthia Ruchti

Publication Date: March 2nd, 2021

Rating: 3 ½ Stars

Mara is a mess, her husband is completing a four-year stint in Uganda building freshwater wells, leaving her the sole caregiver of three children.  One child with a drug problem and newly assigned probation officer, another with a history of poor personal choices, and her youngest with a tender caring heart and no friends.

Facing the Dawn is full of loss, heartache and grieving, all of which feel so tender and real throughout author, Cynthia Ruchti’s, writing as she crafts characters and friendships that leap off the pages.  Rooted heavily in faith, Ruchti delivers a raw and emotional fictional family drama that feels painfully real.  Mara is a character that is hard to like but easy to sympathize with, and as more characters are quickly introduced, the basis of this book is built, lending Mara some redeeming character qualities.

Prepare to sit with grief, loss, and raw feelings as you read this book.  However painful, the story is deeply real, rooted in real life and emotionally wrenching.
